Why is spelling important?  It's important for a lot of reasons.  Some might say it's a chance to get an easy "A" every week on a test.  But more importantly, it allows children to become more familiar with the rules of their own language. By memorizing spelling words, we allow children the chance to become instantly familiar with words while they read. It can also expose them to new words, thus expanding their vocabulary. So, spelling can be an important part of a child's curriculum.

We suggest having your child write out the lists to help them learn or, if your child is a verbal learner, let them spell to you out loud.  Also, for words they have trouble with, try helping your 4th grader remember the words by finding memory clues. For example, the word "color" could be remembered by saying it's C then eye, nose, eye then r as if the o were an eye the l was a nose and the next o was an eye. Most children will remember spelling words very well this way.  Another is to find similar items. For example, if you are helping your child remember how to spell "all" - show them the laundry detergent with the same name.

Another great way for your 4th grader to learn spelling is via board games. Scrabble, Upwords and similar games test a child's spelling and vocabulary skills in a fun and friendly way.

Show them that learning is a lifelong adventure by reading too!  Visit bookstores and the library often. Children almost always follow their parents lead.

Most importantly, have fun learning!
